SUMMARY

The snow caped mountain Santa Isabel is one of the volcanoes of the Colombian central Andean range. Its summit has 5100 msnm, in the south peak. The western area of the glacier is located in the municipality of Villamaría (Caldas deparment), Santa Rosa de Cabal and Pereira (Risaralda department), while the east side of the glacier is located in the Tolima jurisdiction, Murillo and Santa Isabel (Tolima department). As the Tolima´s and Ruiz´s glaciers the glacier zone of the Santa Isabel mountain is included in the protected area of the National Natural Park Los Nevados. (IDEAM 2011).

Climbing it is relatively easy and requires a short technical experience. The rout starts from the Farm Potosí, in Santa Rosa de Cabal, and furthermore along the path known as Conejeras. It is also possible to go up from the Cedral farmland, in Pereira, going thru the cloud forest and El Bosque farmland until arriving to the lake El Otún.

* We are going to visit the “Paramo” a unique ecosystem just founded in 4 countries of the planet.

* Ascent to the tropic snows reaching almost 5000m

* Glacier equipment is included (helmet, harness, crampons, ice axe, carabineers)

* Remember that we are located in the Tropic, that for the weather can be unpredictable and very changeable.

* The estimate times can change, it is a mountain so outside variables can change plans, as well as the walking rhythm.

* We work in a personalized way. We don´t have large groups because of our ethic with the mountain.

Day 1:

6am: Pick up from the city of Pereira or Manizales in a 4WD (jeep) vehicle. The drive has a distance of 55 km using a non-paved road, and it takes approximately 3.5 hours.

10am: arriving to the farm (4000m), where we will take a delicious mountain breakfast and after that we will go to the National Park cabin, there we will register in the park book and the officers will give us a welcome talk.

11am: From the farm to the lake El Otún. This will be our first acclimatization walk above 4000m. With an approximately duration of 3.5 hours.

1pm: We will enjoy a lunch on the way, from the view point of the Lake El Otún.

3pm: The equipment preparation will start and its proper use will be explained.

5pm: We will have a nice dinner and after that have an earned rest in order to be prepared to start the summit attempt that will start at 1:30 am.


Day 2:

1:30am: very early we will drink a hot beverage and some energetic bars. The vehicle will take us along the road until the starting point of the attempt. (4100m), 50 minutes by car.

2:45am: We will start the trek along the path Conejeras that will take us to the center glacier. (4700m) 3.5km. Estimate time 3 hours.

6:30am: Arrival to Conejeras Center Glacier. We set up the equipment and start the summit attempt to the center summit. We will be glacier trekking along the Santa Isabel and then start descending more or less at

9am : until the vehicle that will take us back to the city.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

For all of our plans and itineraries the ideal is to have experience in short and long treks, this way each person will know best their body and how it adapts to the altitude. The volcano Santa Isabel is a non-technical mountain, it doesn´t have a glacier. However, it is not to take it easy, like with any other mountain. This itinerary has been planned for people with some mountain experience, it is required to have a considerable physical condition and that depending on a medical diagnosis (sent by us by email) the person doesn´t have health problems to undertake the itinerary. If in any case do you feel that maybe you are not prepared, there is no problem, we can plan according with your characteristics a more suitable itinerary.

    No technical climbing experience required.
