The Otún lake is a natural water reserve that makes part of the National Natural Park Los Nevados, located at 3950 m, in the unique Páramo ecosystem. Shaped by the volcanic and glacier action, is fed mainly by the melting of the glacier of the Santa Isabel Mountain. It is in the jurisdiction of the department of Risaralda, Colombia.
7am: Meeting point from Pereira city, in a traditional transport (Chiva or Jeep)
9am: Arrival to Cedral, The door of the Regional Natural Park Ucumarí, trek start. The trek starts at 2130 m of altitude, on an old cow-people path, where a whole people history has been developed, and it can be seen along the way of the expedition.
11am: Arrival to the Pastora refuge. At this point we will take a delicious lunch in the middle of the Andean tropical Forest. It is a unique place where different kind of flora and fauna can be appreciated. (2500m)
1 pm: We keep our way to the farm El Jordán, located at 3100m, at the beginning of the Subpáramo. In this farm we will rest for the night and we will have the opportunity to see and learn more about the Colombian mountain culture. (3100m) You can choose to sleep on a dorm or in tents.

7am: After having a nice mountain breakfast we start the trekking to Otún Lake, passing by the Páramo ecosystem. Along this trek we can see some mountains like the Paramillo of Quindío, the Paramillo of Santa Rosa and the Snow mountain of Santa Isabel. Also we can see some farms that has existed from more that 50 years in a protected area, this farms daily generate special practices that make these communities unique.
11am: Arrival to the Otún Lake. Here we will register into the Nacional Park and we will receive a talk from the Park Officers. After setting up the camp we will eat lunch, prepared by our guides and in the afternoon we will make a short trek around and visit the Otún lake viewpoints.

7am: The descending starts to the farm El Jordán where we will take lunch.
11am: Go out from El Jordán to La Pastora. There we will take a nice “aguadepanela” Cain-juice sweeten drink with cheese. Keeping on to El Cedral just in time to get into the Chiva that will take us to Pereira city. We estimate as a maximum arrival time to Pereira at 7pm.
Estimate time: 6 hours.
For all of our plans and itineraries the ideal is to have experience in short and long treks, this way each person will know best their body and how it adapts to the altitude. Otún hiking is a non-technical mountain. However, it is not to take it easy, like with any other mountain. This itinerary has been planned for people with some mountain experience, it is required to have a considerable physical condition and that depending on a medical diagnosis (sent by us by email) the person doesn´t have health problems to undertake the itinerary. If in any case do you feel that maybe you are not prepared, there is no problem, we can plan according with your characteristics a more suitable itinerary.
